This post comes amidst the new 'en vogue' season of Veganuary.
If you know anything about us (5th Generation family farm), you'll probably guess that I'm no fan.
Veganism is a choice, a choice that everyone is free to make. My choice is to look after animals in a way that is more emotional, sympathetic and caring than what many see as cruel 'profitable farming'.
Farmers on the whole do not object to Veganism. However, they are becoming increasing irritated by a constant barrage of insults, front door climate protests, animal rights crusaders and media campaigns that seem to no longer have a balanced view of stating facts (that's you BBC!)
Now to make this more than just a rant, I believe eggs can be a much needed solution that actually forms...
So the deeper we get into this Entrepreneur thing, the more attention we get.
With this attention, comes questioning revolving around who we are, what we do, and why we are doing it with egg and what is the difference. . . I mean why make it difficult for yourself.
The answer is twofold
1) You use what you have at your disposal, even more if it's headed for the disposal.
We are farmers, and have a lot of free range chickens. PECK came about after one of our chicken flocks hit a bumpy patch. A cold, wet winter left them laying lots of eggs that were a bit funny. Funny to look at, funny to touch, not so funny when they end up in the bin. We couldn't figure out why eggs couldn't be something different, something engaging and something healt...
It's been a long road - 4 years of development, hundreds of cracked eggs, thousands of bad puns and we have some exciting things to announce.
Firstly, lets address the elephant in the room. . . . drinking eggs won't be everyone's cup of tea.
There I said it- probably the number one thing I should permanently push to the most repressed part of my brain for maximum denial. Especially as WE ARE the team that is pushing egg white drinks.
But it's the truth- an honest and open fact that Western Europeans are more familiar with eggs as an ingredient for baking, in a fancy pants cocktail, sandwiches when you visit elderly relatives or most importantly- A Full English Breakfast!
Well it's out there- PECK officially launched January 2018, after a lot of time, sweat, tears and eggs!
We have our first Supermarket launch coming in June, (yay), we are now on Amazon (double yay) a few other big things before then, plus lots of enquiries and emails flooding in every single day. Maybe it's time we had a drink or two to celebrate eh?!
Not a chance!
We realised that the biggest task was yet to come, we now have to educate EVERYONE about these 3 things:
1) It's not weird for drinking egg white (no you're not an animal, mad or Rocky Balboa)
2) PECK does not taste Eggy!
3) It's perfectly safe and is probably the highest quality, minimal processed source of protein available!
When talking to stockists, you realise that we a...
How many people know what goes into starting a food/drink business?
It seems pretty simple right? You've made something that friends & family love, Aunt Marie (who always said at age 4 you could be a famous artist while looking at your crayon scribbles) puts it out there that you're food is something SHE would buy from a shop. Next thing you know you get a little stall at your local farmers market, spend all your weekends slaving away, hand making your precious gift to the world. You may be lucky enough to have some local shop owners get back to you about your samples, you make a little on the side supplying local businesses and it makes you happy- you have achieved what many others fail at. A much smaller amount go further than this....
o the news recently covered the fact that British Lion Eggs are now safe for everyone! Speaking personally I knew they were always good for everyone, but it's nice to have big wigs, scientists and government realise it too!
Moreover, eggs are climbing up the agenda, we even made some big time news
They will forever remain the staple of weekend breakfasts, easy family meals, quick fulfilment as well as the long evenings spent baking and experimenting with sweet treat delights!
But that's not quite what PECK is all about. We are about being out and about, and being able to take eggs with you. It's the delicate nature of eggs that make them so precious, but also so damn' awkward to take outside of your own house without making a big gloopy mess ever...
It's nice to put a face to a name, and a name to a brand right?
Or maybe not, maybe you hoped for a team of beautiful fitness people, all glistening with sweat and calories they haven't eaten?
Nope, you just get Matt, on his farm, with his chickens. This is the guy who started this whole thing, the 'thing' being delicious drinks that use egg white, soya milk and nothing but simple, minimalist ingredients.
History will look back at this picture, and your kid's will say- "Mum....Dad, you never drank egg whites until 2017?!"
A pioneer, an icon, a simple farmer with a dream..... and a whole load of chicken poop on his left knee.
So this is us, showing our soul on a plate at the recent VentureField East Investment session. A good gig, a tough gig, a weird gig!
In the investment world, there is a lot of tech going on in certain areas- clean energy, carbon capture, app development, big data yada ya ya.....
Big issues, i'm sure you'll agree...............we apply to none of these- to say we were a red herring was an understatement. However, we went down a storm! A massive bunch of converts to a new kind of drink, a new kind of product and ethos behind food production.
We have decided to not choose further investment just yet, we want to start small and grow into the hole for natural protein drinks.
Production plans still on schedule (for once) and plenty of boring conversatio...
This question is only in relation to food however, so makes it a bit easier to chew (we promise!)
So it boils down to this question- would you rather buy PECK as a product that uses local eggs from local free range chickens from local farms? Or would you rather buy a PECK that actively reduces the amount of eggs that go wasted, regardless of where they are from, or how they are farmed?
This could be a choice we have to make. Right now, we will be launching the drinks using only eggs from local farms, but we may have the opportunity to develop a way of using eggs from supermarkets that don't get sold and are close to Best before dates. Obviously this wouldn't mean they are bad, as our pasteurising process gives them a big 'ol...
So we first started making these drinks 2 years ago, yet still the drinks are not available to buy anywhere...
HOW CAN THAT BE?!?
Well, let me tell you right now- we haven't been sat on our hands all this time I assure you! As we speak, we have secured grant funding, the machinery is ordered from a long long way away, and all the formal procedures and technicalities are underway.
Thats boring jargon for we are nearly there! We are holding a gun to our head and saying we will be smashing out the first orders by late October. . . . but the more delayed it becomes, the more likely we are to give away free stuff- So hang in there Peckers!!
